Description
Our design team was faced with another cliffside challenge that we met by creating a tranquil retreat for our very happy clients. We combined aesthetic appeal with the technical know how to put in a spectacular infinity pool where only sloping rock and dirt existed.
A cascade style freeform pool sits atop a rocky cliffside with its majestic infinity edged wall facing the street. A mountain lake inspired look was achieved with a custom blend of onyx and midnight blue colored quartz plaster further enhanced by the faux rock. The natural landscape lends itself to tranquility with its tall shading trees and lightly scented flowers. Bird feeders are strategically placed to attract hummingbirds to this picturesque oasis. Off to one side sits a miniature rock waterfall adjacent to a quaint bench ideal for reading or calm meditation.
From the beginning, this project provided plenty of design challenges with its slopping rocky site that dropped off at the end of the property. Our first step was to construct perimeter footings for the entire pool and add column support structures, drilling into the rocks themselves. Both the infinity edge and the trough were poured at the same time as the perimeter footings; a monolithic pour so everything was tied together without the use of cold joints. Once that was completed and gravel was used to fill this shell we could then begin work on the structure of the pool itself located above the perimeter footings. Steel rebar from the perimeter footings were tied to the perimeter walls of the pool above to prevent the two sliding away from each other. The mechanical bunker was then constructed in the same manner as the pool footings and in time with the construction of the pool.
A freeform shape was chosen to accentuate the curves of the rocky terrain. Special attention was placed in adding faux rock around the pool and the infinity edge, creating a cohesive natural look and blending into the surrounding garden landscape. A suede gray tile was used on the infinity edge to blend with the rocky cliff but also as a contrast to the neighbouring cooler tones of the faux rock. For aesthetic reasons, the mechanical room was constructed beside the infinity edge wall and below the swimming pool itself. This ensured that the beautiful scenery surrounding the freeform pool was not marred by an unsightly outbuilding.
Use of LED lights and a UV system provide a more environmentally friendly option.
