Description
This is a relatively small space, filled with numerous features, for a client who entertains often. The backyard design features a rectangular pool, an all tile wet-deck, all tile bubbler portion surrounding a sunken seating area around a fire pit. It also as a fire and water wall that is adjacent to the raised perimeter overflow spa, which features “floating stepping stone” which match the light colored Lueder coping. The backside of the yard has a raised cantilevered Knotwood deck, which is an aluminum product, made to look like wood. It features 2 pedestals that are topped with automated fire bowls, and a sheer curtain, falling into the pool below. The modern design highlights many of the fun features that clients are asking for these days. The materials used and superior workmanship provide a very high-quality feel throughout the back yard that echoes the luxury seen throughout the property. The tropical landscape helps to provide an oasis type feel in in the space.
Along with everything they were adding to their property, the client was also gutting and re-doing much of the interior of the existing home, to a modern aesthetic. Due to HOA restrictions, they had to keep with the Mediterranean style for the exterior of the home, but their desire was to create a more modern space inside, and in the backyard.
The layout for the new pool began on the axis through the center of the doors leading from the Master bedroom. Additionally, we utilized the axis line through the center of the new auto court gate as our second control line. Viewing down the length of the pool, from the Master bedroom, we needed a strong element, drawing the eye through the entire space, to the far end. A custom steel shade structure, anchored by a stone feature wall did just the trick. The feature wall includes a window into the landscape beyond, along with two custom vertical stainless-steel scuppers. The shade structure utilizes powder-coated steel I-beams, with a rolling shade element, consisting of 1” steel pipes set 1” apart, allowing the homeowner to move the shade either over the wetdeck area or over the sunken fire pit. When seated in the sunken fire pit area, the pool water disappears into a perimeter overflow channel that surrounds you, allowing an unencumbered view across the surface of the water.
As guests enter through the auto court, they are greeted with a salt-finish concrete driveway, set in large pads with synthetic turf between. The central focus, as you enter the space is a 7’ tall stone wall, with a custom scupper unit, spilling into a hidden trough filled with Mexican beach pebble. The stone wall allows the spa, located on the opposite side, privacy from the street, but includes a glimpse of what is to come, via a window into the 8’ long linear fire unit. From the poolside view, the perimeter overflow spa is seated against the stone wall, and flanked by recessed planter pedestals.
