Description
It is very rare to be able to build two pools on the same residential property. The bar was set high as the first pool on this estate was a national design award winner in 2000.
This client decided to build a Gym and recreational complex in his expanded backyard with the construction to match his existing house. Between the gym and sport court he wanted a 75 foot long lap pool for triathlon training. Knowing this was just a rectangle, he specifically challenged us with designing something as spectacular as his original pool. After all, how hard could it be to design a spectacular rectangle? We designed an all-tile, perimeter overflow pool with two vanishing edges with some extraordinary visual features.
Because the natural grade at the back of the gym was 5 feet below the gym floor, it was necessary for a system of footers and beams to be constructed. Those voids were then filled with gravel to ensure even floor depth.
This project boasts some eye-popping features. The most obvious of which has got to be the 30 foot acrylic window that divides the 75 foot weir wall. The client wanted to observe swimmers in the pool through the window, so it is the only area of the pool edge that is above water level as to not distort the view with cascading water. After the window, the pool lighting features generate the most buzz. In addition to 8 large color changing LED lights in the pool and catch pool, lighted “Candeliers” with automated fire are perched at both ends of the acrylic window. Finally, fiber optic lighting provides a stunning indirect glow around the channel that surrounds the zero edge of the pool.
The interior finish is a stunning iridescent grey glass tile that actually appears to be chrome in sunlight. Contrasting all-tile lap lanes are inlayed as well.
The coping around the catch pool as well as step treads and planter wall caps are tumbled bull nosed travertine. The patio is also done in a tumbled travertine in a Versailles pattern. The outside facing areas exposed by the steps as well as the back of the weir wall are all 6 x 12 split face travertine.
The first 3 feet of patio around the perimeter of the pool is structurally attached to the pool and returns water to the pool whenever surge misses the gutter. This pool is dead level and was field modified on three separate occasions prior to the installation of the tile on the beam. As a result, the entire 184’ perimeter (minus the raised acrylic window) can be kept wet with only one variable speed pump at 25%. A 3-inch channel drain intercepts water coming from the gym and driveway.
Steps (with lighting) on both sides of the pool allow access to the sport court area below the pool. Glass railing provides a safety barrier between the pool deck and the descending stairs.
The entire pool is fully automated and includes a combination UV/ozone system.
