Description
Overwhelmed with an unusable site the clients considered moving in search of a more “pool friendly” property. After conveying their wish list they handed us complete creative freedom. Avoiding a large flight of steps, an aggressive land cut removed 3,500 cubic yards of soil. One wall slicing through the landscape creates a 5’ tall raised beam and handles a bulk of the grade change. The raised beam wall is 16” thick, reinforced with grade 60 steel rebar 4” on center vertically and carries 3 illuminated bowls spilling into the pool. The walls outside the pool shell were formed and poured; a slip expansion joint keeps the structures separate, the wall slopes to meet existing grade in order to preserve a beautiful oak tree on the hillside. All of the veneer stone was fabricated from an 1800’s barn foundation, pieces as thick as 2’ were cut down on site to fit on a 2” brick shelf preserving the aged and hand tooled faces. A 2’ tall dam wall drops into a patio-covered basin with porous joints that catch bather surge. This wall provides for a stunning vanishing edge water feature, allows full access around the pool and retains the balance of the grade to create a flat expansive lawn area. Boulder outcrops were used throughout the landscape to contrast the clean lines and to pay homage to the woodland setting. The fireplace area feels as though it is sunk-in, it is constructed with matching reclaimed barn foundation stone, reclaimed brick and a reclaimed 12” thick oak barn beam for the mantle. The fireplace and wood holders are capped with 6” thick reclaimed slabs. Translating the concept into reality was technically one of our most challenging; there is not 1 right angle on the pool. 2,000 fiber optic twinkling starlight’s illuminate the pool, sun ledge and spa. The hydraulics are designed to move a maximum amount of water at extremely low velocity to create a mirror image on the water. The perimeter overflow spa has 46 linear feet of knife-edge finished with glass tile and 2 captain lounge benches customized to fit the client.
