Description
The first time I laid eyes on this site, the view was so impressive it left me speechless, especially since it is located in the middle of Arkansas. Then I was equally upset when I saw the design plans that a local landscape architect had drawn -- two rectangular pools on top of each other that were terraced down the hill and completely ignored the incredible elevated mountain view over the large reservoir in the distance. To me it looked like a scene from St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands, but in Arkansas instead of the Caribbean. The client engaged us to create a design option that took advantage of the view and was worthy of the setting on which it was perched. The house under construction was a modern farmhouse style -- using natural materials and clean, geometric forms, but in a relaxed style. The concept we created built off of this casual geometric style to serve as an extension of the home into the outdoors. The pool is a full 360-degree perimeter overflow edge, but incorporates different edge details to accomplish the overflow -- including lautner slot edge against the main patio decking, a front spillover catch basin with custom 3-Dimensional Oceanside Glass Tile, and a spillover edge on the back to a gravity feed runnel connected to the detached surge tank below the patio. The design intent was to create a "mirror to the sky" during the day to reflect the clouds above, and to visually connect the pool to the expansive lake views beyond. Offset geometric watershape forms work within the style of the home and work to create contrast of sleek, clean reflective water against the rough texture of the tree foliage below. Fire features accent the corners and transition spaces -- creating ambiance and drama at night, and a custom low-pitch pavilion over the outdoor kitchen area frames the primary mountain view in the distance. The entire pool and outdoor living area draws every visitor through the house and out to the pool to the scenic mountain and lake view below.
